Power over Ethernet (PoE)Power over Ethernet is a
convenient technology used to supply network devices with electrical power
over the Ethernet cable.
Imagine being able to use your existing network cabling to deliver power
to devices without the need to run separate power cables to the devices.
This is what PoE does.
Installation of wireless access points, VoIP phones, security cameras,
can all be powered by your existing Ethernet cables, making installation
quicker and cheaper.
A variation of Power over Ethernet has been utilised in the
telecommunications industry for years, and is what allows your conventional
telephone system to function in the event of mains power loss.
Power over Ethernet extends the reliability of this type of technology.
With no need for the network devices to be located near to a wall socket,
this opens up a wide range of applications for PoE.
There are 2 main components in the PoE system - the Power Sourcing
Equipment (PSE) and the Powered Device (PD). The PSE transmits the
current to the PD over two of the four twisted pairs of wires.
When used in conjunction with a UPS system, and integrated with system
management tools, your critical, network-based facilities can maintain
functionality even in the event of power loss.
Another great benefit of Power over Ethernet is that it is completely
compatible with existing Ethernet switches and network devices.
